Bio

Raja Afzal is a London-based figurative artist currently completing an MA in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, his practice explores themes of human belonging, migration, identity and cultural tension.

His research is grounded in drawing on visual material from archives, image platforms, and publications. Through collage, mapping, and layering, he constructs interconnected visual fields that echo extended family structures and shared histories.

Afzal is interested in how the gaze, silence, and atmosphere can communicate emotional unease, transforming ordinary spaces into psychologically charged environments.

His work moves between Fauvism and childlike drawing from memory, creating imagined figurative scenes that sit between realism and abstraction. Fragmented figures and gestural surfaces are used to evoke memory and internal states rather than fixed narratives.
